KENNESAW - Several of Cobb's top high school
soccer players lowered the curtains on their high
school careers with the DiVarsity.com boys and
girls all-star soccer games Saturday at Cobb Energy/
Mustang Stadium.
Walton's Sarah Nourachi finished her high school
career with a goal for the Class AAAAA Blue team
in its 3-2 loss to the Class A-AAAA White team
in the girls game, while North Cobb's Nick Burton
scored a goal to help lead the AAAAA Blue squad
to a 3-2 win over the A-AAAA White squad in the
boys game.
Nourachi scored her goal midway through the second
half to give the Blue team a 2-1 lead that was
eventually erased by two goals by the White team
in the final 15½ minutes of the game.
For her efforts, Nourachi was named the MVP for
the Blue team.
"It was a good way to end my high school
career," said Nourachi, who will be attending
College of Charleston, but won't be playing soccer
there.
Kennesaw Mountain's Melanie Connor scored the
other goal of the game for the Blue team.
For Kennesaw Mountain and Blue team coach Patrick
Fox, the game was an enjoyable experience.
"It was an exhibition game, so it was fun
for me," Fox said. "It was a great opportunity
to watch good soccer."
In the boys game, Burton scored one of three
goals for the Blue team, with Houston County's
Richie Wimsatt and Mill Creek's Lewis Makin scoring
the other two.
Walker coach Gary Blohm, one of the three White
team coaches, was impressed with how the players
were able to gel together on the field despite
not being able to practice together at all before
the game.
"Both teams did a great job," Blohm
said. "You had a lot of guys playing out
of their comfort zone, but they did a great job
adapting."
The White team struck first in the girls game
and took a 1-0 lead as Heritage's Megan Drish
scored with 34:04 remaining in the first half.
Kennesaw Mountain's Keri McGinnis had a couple
of scoring opportunities for the Blue team later
in the first half, attempting a shot that was
deflected by White team goalkeeper Michelle Heidt
of Riverwood with 20:55 remaining and then launching
a shot just over the goal with 12:00 left.
Conner put the Blue team on the scoreboard as
her goal with 30:16 remaining in the game tied
the score, 1-1, with Nourachi following that up
with a goal of her own with 19:04 left to put
the Blue squad ahead, 2-1.
It was all White team
after that, however, as Sequoyah's Emily Dover
scored with 15:31 left and then scored again with
4:17 left to provide the winning margin for the
A-AAAA squad.
The boys game was a scoreless battle in the first
half before Wimsatt's goal with 37:35 remaining
in the game gave the Blue team a 1-0 lead.
Savannah Christian's Tyler Hooks scored on a
header for the White team with 29:11 left in the
game to tie the score, 1-1, but Burton's goal
on a free kick with 19:44 left put the Blue team
back in front, 2-1.
The White team evened the game back up, 2-2,
on a goal from Starr's Mill's Jesy Phelps, but
Makin drilled a long shot into the goal with 10:30
left to give the Blue squad the lead for good.
